It seems there are some lessons America can learn from Africa on the issue of human rights with the wave of global protest against the killing of an African -American by US policemen hitting the continent.. In Abuja, Nigeria’s capital,a group of Nigerians under the auspices of Black Lives Matter Movement on Tuesday besieged the Embassy of United States in Abuja to protest the gruesome murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.

The protesters disregarded the armed policemen stationed at the embassy to sink in their message. The protesters demanded an end to racial discrimination and injustice and killing of innocent citizens irrespective of skin colour.

Meanwhile, another group of Nigerians in Lagos also protested the killing of George Floyd by a ‘white’ cop, Derek Chauvin, in Minneapolis, United States of America.

Reacting to the killing of Floyd by Chauvin and the growing protests in the streets of various states of America, the Black Lives Matter Movement in Nigeria (BLMMN) defied the heavy downpour in Lagos in condemnation of racism against coloured people in the US.

Speaking on behalf of the group, convener, Josephine Okpara said an end must be put to “white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on black communities by the state and vigilantes”.
