Nigeria: Lagos government claims N1m expenditure on each COVID-19 patient daily
It was total consternation among the Nigerians yesterday evening when Lagos, the country’s commercial nerve centre declared that it spends between N100k and N1m ( one million naira) on each COVID-19 patient daily
The state commissioner for health, Professor Akin Abayomi, , made this surprise disclosure on Thursday in Lagos during a press briefing on COVID-19 treatment and prevention activities in the state. Many Nigerians, especially Lagosians on social media and in various whatsapp groups expressed deep surprise that the average cost of daily care of a COVID 19 patient could be that high.
The Commissioner explained that it costs the government at least N100,000 daily to treat each patient with mild cases of the disease while serious or intensive COVID-19 cases cost the state government between N500,000 and N1m
Abayomi also pointed out that the figures included the cost of treatment, feeding, accommodation, and the services provided by the healthcare givers among others. He also noted that it is very difficult to calculate exactly what it costs the state government to treat each COVID-19 patient.
