History was made this week as  US Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden named Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate. She is the first black woman to serve in the role.

Once a rival for the top job, the California senator of Indian-Jamaican heritage had long been considered the front-runner for the VP position. Mr Biden will face President Donald Trump in the election on 3 November.

Vice-President Mike Pence remains the Republican incumbent’s running mate.

Mr Biden tweeted that he had “the great honour” to name Ms Harris as his running mate.Ms Harris, 55, seen as a rising star within the Democratic party, dropped out of the presidential race in December.

Harris was born in Oakland, California to two immigrant parents: an Indian-born mother and Jamaican-born father.

AFP reports that soon after the announcement, Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden and vice presidential candidate Senator Kamala Harris were on  seen on stage during a campaign event, their first joint appearance since Biden named Harris as his running mate.

Biden, speaking alongside Harris in his Delaware hometown of Wilmington, said it was time after one term of President Donald Trump to “rebuild this country.””Everything we care about,” Harris said, “it’s all on the line.”

Harris — a 55-year-old senator who would also be the first woman elected to the White House if the Democratic duo wins — pummeled the Republican president, saying he “just isn’t up for the job.”

“We’re experiencing a moral reckoning with racism and systemic injustice that has brought a new coalition of conscience to the streets of our country demanding change,” she said.
