It’s that time of the year again, the time when everyone looks forward to getting together with family, singing hymns and carols together, boxing and unboxing gifts, and basically just enjoying the beautiful spirit of Christmas. Of course, Christmas is a global season, and extends to Africa as well.
Africa though, has over the years, been little more than a chess board for the world’s most powerful and influential nations, a place whose beauty and potential has long been obscured by the somewhat deliberate misrepresentation from the international perspective.
The fact remains however, that Africa remains a beautiful continent, despite the many flaws it is associated with. And for this Christmas, here is a list of things we would like to see differently about our continent 🙂
The African Wishlist For Christmas
AN AFRICA THAT FLOURISHES WITH INCLUSIVE GROWTH AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Yes. We are getting there, gradually. But it would not hurt for us to go a bit faster. We want to develop into a flourishing continent that becomes a global destination for more than just Safaris and other tourism attractions. We want the world to start rushing down here to find answers to roblems that have plagued the world from time immemorial. We want our respect!
A UNITED AFRICA
This is very important! In order for us to achieve the first item on this list, we need to embrace one another as a continent and understand that even though we have diverse cultures, we are all bound by the name Africa and as such, we should be united!
A PEACEFUL AND SECURE AFRICA
African countries at different times have had to deal with issues of war, violence and insecurity, and it has been a stain on our collective image for years. It is absolutely impossible to hold a tangible seat at the world’s round table discussions if we are unable to fix the problem of insecurity, and that is why we wish this Christmas, for a peaceful and secure Africa!
AN AFRICA WITH GOOD GOVERNANCE AND RESECT FOR THE RULE OF LAW
We have really come a long way as a continent, with different countries being subjected over the years, to varying ideals of a good governance. However, the truth is that there is a set definition of a truly democratic society where the Rule of Law is paramount: where everyone, regardless of status, is equally subject to the law, and where fundamental human rights are resected and valued. This is one of the most important items on this list!
A STRONG, UNITED AND GLOBALLY INFLUENTIAL AFRICA
Finally, after we must have achieved peace, unity and good governance, we would definitely be able to achieve global influence and participate in global decisions and discussions. Africa is the origin of the Earth, whether anyone likes to hear it or not, and it would be a shame not to have a seat at the table where decisions affecting the entire globe, are being taken. For this reason, we wish for a strong, united and globally influential Africa.
