Nigerian-born medical doctor Iyalla Peterside, has been named one of America’s Best Physicians for the year 2020 by the US National Consumer Advisory Board. The list of America’s Best Physicians is a list of some of the most outstanding medical practitioners from the previous year.

It is a generally accepted fact that Nigerians in diaspora, fueled by a passion to succeed, make a global impact, and as a result of consistent resilience, they continue to record phenomenal successes on the global horizon across a wide range of fields. Dr. Iyalla Peterside is only one in recent years, of some notable Nigerians in the diaspora who have recorded milestones and landmark achievements in a variety of fields.

ABOUT DR. IYALLA PETERSIDE

Iyalla Peterside, MD, MRCP, FAAP is a Professor of Pediatrics and Neonatology at the Perelman School Of Medicine at the University Of Pennsylvania and a Consultant at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia considered one of the best Children’s Hospitals in the world where he has worked for over 20 years.

Iyalla Peterside is also the medical director of the Intensive Care Unit at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His areas of interest are care of the complex neonatal patient, infection control with emphasis on catheter-related blood stream infections. He has expertise on the use of ECMO to treat critically ill patients in respiratory and cardiac failure.

He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London and Ireland, and president of the Philadelphia Perinatal Society.

Dr. Iyalla Peterside obtained his medical degree (MD) at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, after which he did his residency at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. He interned at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Nigeria as well as Booth Hall Children’s Hospital, Manchester, England where he trained in pediatrics, pediatric surgery and neonatology.

He continued his training at the Brooklyn Medical Center in New York and completed a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

He is a fellow of both the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Nigeria and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA, United States. He has received many awards from his colleagues and professional associations in the United States. His area of expertise is complex surgical neonates, infants needing extracorporeal support, and babies with Chronic lung disease.

Iyalla Peterside is among many Nigerian professionals who constitute the most celebrated diaspora community in the United States. According to data from the Migration Policy Institute, Nigerians are the most highly educated of all diaspora groups in the US, with 61% possessing a minimum qualification of a bachelors degree as against the 31% of the total foreign-born population and 32% of the US-born population.

The study further shows that more than half of Nigerian immigrants (54%), were most likely to occupy management positions, in comparison with 32% of the total foreign-born population and 39% of the US-born population. Nigerians also dominate the creative art sector in the United States.

Dr Iyalla Peterside joins the likes of Dr Bennet Omalu as one of Nigeria’s foremost and most successful medical doctors in the United States.
