
Madrid overcame Alaves 2-0 on Friday evening to restore a four-point lead on Barcelona at the top of La Liga. Benzema had put the hosts in front after 11 minutes from the penalty spot after Navarro brought down Mendy.
Mendy had uses his pace to get past Navarro and the Alaves right-back made a clumsy challenge. VAR confirmed that contact was indeed made inside the box, so a penalty is awarded.
Benzema tucked the ball towards the bottom-left corner and Alaves goal keeper, Jimenez dived the opposite way. Regular taker Ramos was in the stands, but it was obviuosly a good penalty from the Frenchman.
The second goal came after 50 minutes when Rodrygo played the ball through for Benzema, who appeared to be offside. He continued running and squared the ball for Asensio to slot it in. It was checked via VAR and the replay showed that Benzema was indeed onside so the goal stood
Following Karim Benzema’s successfully-converted penalty earlier in the first half, Real Madrid have now scored spot-kicks in three successive LaLiga games for the first time since May 2006.
This victory is now eight wins in a row for Zidane’s men, the last five of those without conceding. Next up for the league leaders is a trip to Granada on Monday, the same day that Alaves – three points above the relegation zone with three games to go – will play host to high-flying Getafe.
