Basketball legend, Michael Jordan has donated $100 million to help groups fighting for racial equality and social justice.
Michael Jordan stated that the Jordan Brand will donate $100M over the next 10 years to causes that ensure racial equality, social justice and greater access to education.
Jordan’s donation comes after a week of unprecedented nationwide protests across the United States on other countries of the world over the killing of a black man, George Floyd by white American policemen.
The joint statement by Jordan and his brand, produced by Nike Inc., vows to donate the $100 million over 10 years to “organizations dedicated to ensuring racial equality, social justice and greater access to education.”
the announcement also said. “Until the ingrained racism that allows our country’s institutions to fail is completely eradicated, we will remain committed to protecting and improving the lives of Black people.”
The donation comes after Jordan condemned the killing of George Floyd in police custody last week as video of the death has sparked global calls for racial equality and an end to police brutality.
In his statement on Sunday, Jordan shared his condolences with Floyd’s family as well as “the countless others whose lives have been brutally and senselessly taken through acts of racism and injustice.”
“Our unified voice needs to put pressure on leaders to change our laws, or else we need to use our vote to create systemic change,” he wrote. “Every one of us needs to be part of the solution, and we must work together to ensure justice for all.”
