In a move that is bound to dislocate the backbone of Nigeria’s main opposition party, PDP in Edo state and lawmakers supporting the Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, Nigeria’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami has ordered the Inspector General of Police to provide immediate security for the 17 Edo All Progressives Congress Lawmakers.

In the letter dated August 5 based on a petition to his office by a legal team,  Idahosa-West Chambers, Malami declared that the security measures were necessary to prevent the breakdown of law and order in Edo state.

They are now 17 lawmakers backing All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.   The two groups have been locked in a rough- and- tumble battle to gain access to the Edo Assembly complex on Ring Road, Benin. The assembly was under the control of the seven lawmakers loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Many analysts believe with this huge tilt in balance, impeachment proceeding is bound to commence against Obaseki in a matter of days. Although many observers feel this might not really succeed immediately, it is believed the aim is to ruffle and distract the governor’s campaign team and reduce the impact state resources will make during the elections as the lawmakers are prepared to rave-up the allegation of misappropriation of public funds to preempt any abuse by the governor and his supporters.
