Nigerian FG Sets Up Committee To Negotiate Twitter Ban.

The Nigerian government today announced that it has set up a committee to negotiate with social media giant, Twitter, few weeks after a controversial government ban on the platform’s use in Nigeria.

The committee comprises five serving ministers in the Nigerian government, including Lai Mohammed, Tunde Fashola and Isa Pantami among others.

BACKGROUND TO THE TWITTER BAN

The Nigerian government weeks ago, banned the use of Twitter in Nigeria after the social media platform deleted a controversial tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari. The Nigerian government also accused Twitter and its leaders of acting against the interest of Nigeria.

The ban was and is still being condemned by many Nigerians, human rights groups and foreign governments as an attack on the freedom of expression.

The Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the composition of the Federal Government’s Team to engage with Twitter over the recent suspension of the operations of the microblogging and social networking service in Nigeria.

The announcement was made today in Abuja by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who will chair the team.
